Teachers and schools can apply for funding. Funding can be requested on a per-classroom basis, or a school (or parent-teacher group representing a school) can apply for multiple classrooms at a school site.
As we expect demand to outpace available funds, grants will be prioritized based on classroom temperatures and on need. If your Oakland school is not a Title 1 school or has fewer than 50% of its student population eligible for free/reduced lunch, we encourage you to fund the need at your school site directly through your PTA.
MOST COMMON - $500 grant to fund the purchase of a portable A/C (spec sheet provided), insulation, and installation supplies
Also available - $50 grant for rooms that already have a portable A/C and only need insulation and installation supplies
Grants can be provided on a per-classroom basis or on a multi-classroom basis.
Classrooms that already have DIY cooling methods may apply again. Simply indicate that you are applying for a replacement unit. Classrooms without a portable A/C may be prioritized first.
Yes, we've heard that said too. So have the schools that have tried this and had it work for them. OUSD says that it will perform electrical capacity assessments, but hasn't scheduled them yet. You can choose to wait until this assessment has been scheduled and performed, or you can apply for funding in the meantime. It's up to you!
