We are asking around... what are other Districts doing? Have something to add? Email cooltheschools1926@gmail.com
Berkeley Unified sent a letter to staff to validate their concerns, show empathy, share strategies (using district-provided resources like ceiling fans) and share what is being done long term. Compare that to the letter Oakland Unified staff received the very same week.
Oakland Unified references many items that are not always possible for teachers, and provides no additional ways for teachers to get support:
Fans are not provided by the district. Teachers or parents have to pay to provide these.
Air purifiers are not cleaned and maintaned by the district. The filters are not changed by the district.
Blinds do not work consistently and cannot be opened and closed in every classroom. Work orders to fix blinds are not responded to.
There is not always drinking water accessible for use in classrooms. Many schools only have FloWaters in 1-2 locations that students cannot access consistently or on-demand.
OUSD says -- "in case a classroom becomes too hot to allow students and staff to work comfortably" -- this is the case in over 2,100 classrooms on a regular basis, not only in heat waves.
Another neighboring district has shown that they can quickly implement cooling solutions, 5x faster than projected. We shared their rubric with OUSD and asked them to get in touch with Alameda Unified. We never received a response from anyone on OUSD Facilities, including Preston Thomas.
Why can't OUSD use this rubric as a starting point (and add equity measures) to fast track their work?
